The Auckland Art Gallery Toi o Tamaki is New Zealand’s oldest established and largest public art gallery and has increasingly become a focal point of Auckland’s rich and diverse cultural fabric. The redevelopment of the gallery created a vibrant new focal point within the cultural precinct of the city that integrates the gallery, adjacent park and street and effortlessly connects art with people, offering a diversity of visual art, leisure and learning experiences. The project incorporates contemporary and heritage buildings, flexible atrium/function spaces and new and refurbished gallery areas that doubled the gallery’s previous curatorial capacity.
Steensen Varming has been involved from the early feasibility studies to completion, working closely with the architects to develop the lighting design for the public spaces and galleries, including the foyer spaces and external areas.
