Jameel Prize 5 for Islamic Arts Exhibition, Victoria & Albert Museum

Steensen Varming developed and commissioned the lighting for the Jameel Prize 5 exhibition, an international award for contemporary artists and designers inspired by Islamic traditions of art, craft and design. The lighting design aimed to create individual focus and enhancement of form and texture for each of the different installations, using both light and shade.

The most important aspect of the lighting design was balancing the individual requirements of each of the artists together with ensuring the exhibition reads as a whole, providing equal opportunity for all the finalists for the final judging done at the V&A on the opening day. Challenges were overcome working with existing stock, minimising overal cost, and integrating new technology within existing equipment. The final outcome is a beautiful balance of light where the slightly cooler lighting integrates within the plinth barrier complimenting the warmer tones of the dimmed spotlights.
