Founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1906, the Mater has evolved from a small cottage hospital, caring for women and children, to a world class facility. The Mater Mother’s Adult and Children’s Hospitals provide quality healthcare for public patients.
Steensen Varming was the lighting designers, electrical engineers and vertical transportation engineers for the major redevelopment of this adult hospital and a linking road bridge across the site.
As light can damage the retina in newborns the Lighting Designers extensively researched the effects of artificial lighting on circadian rhythm and designed a solution using cyclical lighting for the Neonatal Critical Care Unit at the new Mother’s Hospital – a leading facility with 88 maternity beds, 16 birthing rooms and 79 NCCU cot spaces.
