Point Cloud Scanning (PCS)

PCS (Point Cloud Scanning) is a technique of capturing physical data in a highly rapid and accurate format. Utilising a Laser Scanner to capture geometric information negates error in the collection of existing information traditionally achieved with photos, notes, and manual measurements.

PCS has become an integral part of our workflow at Steensen Varming. Offering the latest in technology has proven to not only meet cutting-edge digital engineering integration, but also to be a highly sophisticated framework for stakeholder engagement. Not only have we been able to add value to projects in a BIM environment, with the most technically advanced companies in the industry, but PCS has also enabled us to work with stakeholders that still operate with hand sketch deliverables. PCS speaks a common language across the design spectrum and provides a platform for engagement at all levels, in particular with clients with little to no engineering or building experience.

The methods we employ use the latest in hardware offerings such as Phase Based scanning. This enables us to use a device that now operates using a class one laser making the process safer than ever before and enabling data capture in sensitive areas such as galleries and densely populated spaces.

Our software techniques have improved significantly, reducing post production time by employing sophisticated algorithms to generate auto placement and rationalisation of scans during registration.

Our current framework is focused on delivering a BIM based solution. Using PCS for BIM deliverables reframes the requirements of outputs generated by PCS, but more importantly drives the capture process itself. Steensen Varming have redefined the whole PCS process by defining a clear understanding of what will drive a BIM and then forming a concise scan strategy. Utilising new software tools such as the latest offerings from Autodesk Recap Pro has enabled us to streamline the way PCS is created and ultimately leverage and extract the most for BIM deliverables.

A number of additional functions have been created using PCS. As-built installations can be documented and validated; a process that has always been challenging in particular where documentation is considered poor. Reviews can also be carried out in a fraction of the time, through straight forward validation on submitted Building Information Models (BIMs) or plain vector based files.

After completing a significant amount of project work at Australia’s leading galleries, we have also developed techniques to capture artefacts to a high degree of accuracy. These were initially used in BIM for asset management purposes but have started to be used for other purposes such as digital storage and reproduction.
