This project challenged CSIRO’s standard approach to the full air-conditioning of Laboratory Buildings. This was achieved through a considered approach in separating the laboratory’s tighter control requirements, and office / write up component into two, with the latter more suitable to a mixed mode ventilation strategy.
The challenge came in convincing a relatively conservative client, into changing their traditional approach and in embracing a predominantly naturally ventilated services design. Through extensive performance modelling, Whole of Life costing, and design team collaboration. We were able to propose a design that included two large building defining thermal chimneys, connected to a central atrium, with incoming air entering through evenly disturbed automated openings on all 4 levels.
The type and position of openings were integrated into the overarching strategy for daylight and glare control. Now completed, the results have been highly positive, with the further widening of temperature control bands, and reported general happiness and wellbeing of the occupants that reside within.
