Previously famous for being Denmark’s tallest building, until 2022, Herlev Hospital’s 25-storey ward block is connected to its treatment block and distribution centre by a fully automated vertical transport system carrying 250 beds a day as well as books, medical samples and records. Steensen Varming provided planning and briefing advice at the early stages followed by design documentation, contract administration and site supervision for mechanical, hydraulic, fire protection and communication/controls.
Herlev, the “Polychrome Hospital” is also the country’s largest site-specific artwork. Artist Poul Gernes coloured every surface, handle and door frame for the 150,000m2 composition. The scheme appears random and confusing until order prevails in the treatment tower where the constructive colour properties and placement engender positivity in the patients, contributing to a sense of wellbeing and recovery.
