The Barangaroo Pier Pavilion on the edge of Waterman’s Cove is a winning competition scheme led by SPRESSER for a new permanent public pavilion. The Pavilion celebrates elements that compose the site: land, sea and sky. Made of recycled Sydney oyster shells, the Pavilion references human gathering by the sea. It is designed as a democratic gathering space under a landscape canopy and acts as a meeting place, a site for events, and a memorable part of the city.
Structurally, the Pavilion includes 86 columns at the pavilion perimeter, 18 metre double-sided permanent seats and a landscaped green roof that incorporates a seven metre diameter oculus and is covered with native plants species to attract wildlife.
The lighting design and electrical engineering is designed to create flexible lighting and power systems which caters for and can adapt to a variety of uses and events. The sustainability advice provided by the team is a fundamental guiding principle of the pavilion design, construction and operations.
