Steensen Varming worked with experience design agency, Event, and the National Museum of Denmark to create an exhibition to showcase Roskilde 6, the largest Viking Warship of its kind, and other archaeological Viking treasures.
The exhibition brief was to communicate a high-level expert information combined with a sensuous narrative angle which provide visitors with a unique and immersive experience of the Viking story.
Steensen Varming took an innovative and collaborative approach to the exhibition lighting design to provide visual enhancement, functionality, and enhance the drama of the displays. The lighting also had to deliver a seamless experience that tied The Raid temporary exhibition together with permanent exhibitions within a combined space.
The Raid opened to critical acclaim and forms part of the museum’s long-term plan to introduce more of a storytelling approach within its galleries. Over time, this exhibition will evolve to focus on different aspects of the Viking story, while keeping the core structure of the displays.
