Sydney Grammar School developed a new sporting centre, known as The SGS Weigall Sports Complex. The project required demolition of existing structures and buildings at the southern edge of the existing SGS Weigall Playing Fields. The new Sports Complex consolidates the PDHPE needs of the existing student population within the SGS Community. The new complex includes approximately 10,000sqm of floor space, to accommodate the following facilities:
- 50m x 25m and LTS (Learn to Swim) indoor swimming pools;
- 3 Indoor basketball courts / large multipurpose hall & an indoor international grade volleyball court;
- 4 x multipurpose halls (Approx 350m2 each) & Rifle range (indoors);
- Administration Offices & Café;
- Associated changing facilities and grandstand spectator viewing areas;
- Parking for cars and associated bus / coach parking;
The project brief was for an Exemplar Building: A building of the highest architectural and environmental standards that mirrors the values of the school.
Steensen Varming worked closely with architect AJC, the wider design team and the client in developing a project specific ESD framework that delivers on this highly aspirational target. Some on the initiatives proposed include: Mixed mode ventilation, high performance façade, well-sealed building envelope, all electric systems (no gas), multifunctional / heat recovery chillers, large PV array, relaxed setpoint control, single pass with heat recovery conditioning of the pool space, building performing as a teaching tool.
