Following the completion of the Lighting Masterplan for the University of Sydney, Steensen Varming has been engaged to design the lighting for the key entry walkway into the Darlington Campus – The Shepherd Street walk.
The lighting for this pedestrian walkway creates an intimate night-time experience while providing the required safety lighting: With a single uplight next to each steel post, integrated into the timber deck on the entry side, lighting highlights the material, colour and form of the posts, welcoming people into the campus.
In addition to soft general security lighting from above and the guiding light along the corten steel posts, a constellation of lighting points adds a further dimension of entry experience at night-time. To reduce installation and maintenance cost, a simple solution had been developed. Instead of using individual uplights, a field of raisin filled holes has been developed, underlit with simple waterproof luminaires.
