The Kings Avenue Overpass is the most significant piece of urban and traffic infrastructure to be constructed in the Parliamentary Triangle since the construction of Parliament House some 23 years ago. As a gateway into the city and a major infrastructure project on a nationally significant site, care and attention has been given to the quality of its design, so that it complements the high quality of design that has been developed over the years throughout the Parliamentary Triangle. The lighting design demonstrates intent to successfully fit this major piece of infrastructure into its surrounding landscape setting and topography.
An innovative system of indirect lighting for the tunnel negates the need for any ceiling or wall mounted lighting, decreases the contrast and alleviates glare, allows for ease of maintenance and enhances form and material. Integrated lighting enhances the night-time character of the unique architecture of the overpass and forms a gateway into the Canberra city centre and to the Parliamentary Zone from Canberra International Airport.
